VXI Plug and Play
VXI Newsletter Editor's CommentEditor's Note, Reprinted from VXI Newsletter, Volume 5, Issue 8, May/June 1994. I looked into the Diagnostician software a little further, and found the following. The original Diagnostician worked on UNIX. It has been ported to the LabVIEW for Windows environment by Giordano Automation. The Diagnostician software uses Artificial Intelligence routines that apply logic constructs about the cause of a fault based upon a UUT specific knowledge base which is generated by the Diagnostic Profiler. It uses Pass/Fail data from the execution of test performed in the LabVIEW environment. These pass/fail results are passed internally to the Diagnostician. You can send the Diagnostician as many test results as you want, and in any order. The Diagnostician interprets test results through interaction with the knowledge base. All else being equal, the more results it is given, the better is its resulting diagnosis. It performs its diagnosis using a process of elimination. The goal is to pinpoint the cause of the failure. As more relevant data is received, more causes can be eliminated. If insufficient test information exists to meet this goal, the smallest possible ambiguity group is provided. The capability to utilize test results in any order and any quantity is a powerful attribute. What makes this unique and interesting is the integration of a powerful graphical applications package such as LabVIEW with this artificial intelligence tool. That, combined with the VXI architecture should provide a powerful, flexible platform. The modularity of the software is key, because a big part of the appeal of this system is its ability to grow with the addition of new test hardware as new applications appear. LabVIEW should give the user the flexibility to develop new test routines much more economically. And finally, the addition of the Diagnostician software package promises a much quicker path of troubleshooting information and repair than has been available in the past. Together, these seem to make a very synergistic VXI testing system. It is very hard for me to get a good estimate of how much a single system would cost, or exactly how cost effective it would be compared to other systems. Only specific quotes for a specific testing problem would provide this comparison. Contact Kenneth Carroll of IE, (973) 389-0801 for detail cost. (VXI Newsletter, Volume 5, Issue 8, May/June 1994)
